Costa Rica's Transport Ministry announced that paving of the Costanera Sur highway should be completed by the end of 2009. The long awaited project covers the 26 mile stretch between Quepos and Dominical, and will open the Southern Pacific Coastal zone to people visiting the highly popular areas Manuel Antonio and Jaco. The Costanera Sur already has been graded. That was a $17.7 million job that included installing drainage systems and new bridges. The final paving is in two contracts. The job between Savegre and Quepos is about 19 kilometers (about 13 miles) and will cost $16.4 million. The section from Savegre to Dominical is 22.6 kilometers (about 14 miles). The contract is for $15.5 million. In both sections the workers will install a 30-centimeter (12-inch) sub base, a 20-centimeter (eight-inch) base and a 13-centimeter (5.1-inch) road surface.

Hacienda Matapalo gets permit for its main road
Special to A.M. Costa Rica
Hacienda Matapalo www.haciendamatapalo.com has received a permit to begin work on the main interior road, which will go from the property frontage all the way up to the 125-acre nature preserve. This road will provide easy access up and down the property without the need for horses, developers said.
“Our road team is ready to begin work, the equipment is on its way to the property today” said partner Edwin Acosta.
This road can be accessed directly from the Costanera highway along the Pacific coast, which is being raised, widened and paved. The finished Costanera Highway will reduce the drive from the new international airport proposed for the Sierpe Valley) to the top elevations of Hacienda Matapalo to only about an hour, said developers.
The new Costanera is making significant progress on a daily basis. Nearly all of the bridges from Quepos to Matapalo are being rebuilt or replaced with many of them already completed. This stretch between Quepos and Dominical connect the Central Pacific Coast with Costa Rica’s Southern Zone and the Osa Peninsula. It had been gravel with frequent outages in bad weather.
The completion of the new Costanera highway coincides with Hacienda Matapalo’s expected delivery of their Phase One condominiums and villas, the developers said.
